But the park hotels & concessions begin to gradually close after the second and third full weekends in September. Fall is nice too.Fall colors, cooler temperatures for hiking. From Labor Day weekend forward, the crowds begin to thin as families have to return to work and school. Heavy snows and the late winter and early Spring avalanches have repeatedly destroyed every protective barrier ever constructed.Īfter GTTSR opens, the crowds begin to arrive. On the east side of Logan Pass, you will notice that there are few guardrails. On occasion, Spring snows can also delay work and require re-plowing of sections already cleared. The crews using multiple plows of various sizes can clear as little as 500 feet of the road per day. The road takes about ten weeks to plow, even with equipment that they say can move 4,000 tons of snow in an hour. It is usually the last area to be cleared. Up to 80' of snow can accumulate at Logan Pass, and more just east of the pass where the deepest snowfield has been named the Big Drift. The GTTSR is one of the most difficult roads in North America to plow in the spring. La Nina is providing more moisture in general to the Northern-tier states. The road can open to full traffic all the way across the park from west to east as early as mid-June. How soon in the year the road opens depends entirely on each Winter's snow pack. The east side construction was completed last year. There can be avalanche damage on the Alpine section of it every spring that needs repair before they finally inspect the road for safety and open it to traffic. They closed the Lake McDonald valley-side earlier than normal last fall, not only due to the fire but to work on and complete road paving & improvement of the turnouts. The construction on the road should be mostly complete.
